Three is a Magic Number

For some time now, I have been hearing John C. Dvorak and Adam Curry talk about three being a magic number on their show, No Agenda. Well, for the most part I kept it to myself. However, when I finally spoke up about it, it appeared that three really is a magic number. Coincidence? I think not!

On Friday, July 30, I decided to have fun with this and started to tell my kids about how three is a magic number.  This revelation turned into a scavenger hunt for three.  We saw three objects everywhere.  Our coffee table has three decorative candles.  The television has three speakers (left, right, and center.)  We have candle holders in the wall that have three candles.  We have three pictures on one wall of our three children.  We have three children.  Their are ages turn out to be multiples of three: 3 × 2, 3 × 3, and 3 × 4.  That’s 6, 9, and 12.

We didn’t give it much thought after a while.  But the big shocker came the following day when my oldest son did something he doesn’t usually do.  He turned on the news.  Within three minutes of turning on the news, the news anchor announced the winning number to The Daily Three lottery.  Surprisingly, it was 3-3-3!  Chills came through our spine, and my son was like “Three is really a magic number.”

Of course, my answer was, “I told you so.”

Not sure if at this point I am going in circles. There is definitely work that has to be done so the show is ready to go again once more. But I guess because I am such a perfectionist, I don’t feel I am ready for Episode 38.

At the same time, I am limited with my time away from work. I am finding some sacrifice with my personal life, but then again, this is what I like to do anyway.

I hate that every Sunday I seem to keep postponing the show. It seems to be the same story too: “This week for sure.” But hopefully, this Sunday, will be the one. Stay tuned.

Just want to let you know that I have decided to continue to do the show.  I know that I have gone on a very long hiatus.  Time has scarce due to work and family.  At the same time, I have given much thought about what I wanted to do with the show.  But at the end of the day, I realize that I like the show much the way it is.

However, there may be some minor changes.  I have decided that I am going to focus on Music and Philosophy twinkled with my life experiences.  I may or may not keep the oxymoron of the week.  I plan to only keep it if I can set up a mechanism where you will be able to interact with the OW.  In other words, I want you to be able to vote on whether I or not I busted the oxymoron of the week.  But we’ll see.

So for now, I promise that this week I will work on a show for you and have it ready for this Sunday, May 30.  For now, stay tuned here for more information!

UPDATE: Something that I have been contemplating much is revenue.  Although I really enjoy doing The PePe Show, I would like to make it worth my while.  While I know that I won’t get rich or be able to live off the show, I would like to be able to earn some extra cash to at least pay for the equipment and hosting.

One revenue stream would be advertising, of course.  Yet, for now, I don’t have any direct advertiser that will be running a campaign on the PodCast.  Instead, I will take advertisers on this website.  So please, help the show by taking advantage of the offers that will be listed on this site.

I will be creating special pages for the advertisers where you can read more about them.  So please look for that in the coming week.

I am excited that despite my account with the advertisers was closed due to inactivity, I have been accepted by most of the advertisers I had previously.  So look for advertisers coming soon.  Most of them, I am excited about because they are products/services I use.

Funny how I seem to be struggling in doing the show from home. Yet, this time, I was able to do the show with a lot less equipment. And, I didn’t even complained about the sound. As a matter of fact, I feel proud of the way this one sounds.

paralysis by analysis

Many of you may be wondering what has happened to me. Let me assure you that I am well and nothing has happened to me. The story remains the same: just not enough time.

Many things have been happening in the world and I have been wanting to report on them. Sometimes I feel that I am getting a case of “paralysis by analysis” since I am overthinking the show. I want to be able to encorporate my thoughts and feelings into the show, but I don’t exactly know how. Fact of the matter is that I just need to do it and see what comes out.

One thing is for sure: I want to make the show worth your time. That is going to be my goal and mission moving forward. For now, please stay tuned. I hope to bring you a show real soon.

On my last day in New York I was able to squeeze in one last show.  Sure, it was exactly one month after the last, but that was all I was able to do.  I really was hoping to do more shows, but I was very busy at work.

Let’s hope you enjoy this one.  I hurried to get it done, and I did it early in the morning.  I hate doing the shows in hotel rooms at that time since it I can’t be too loud.  Yet, overall figure out the software on the Mac and didn’t have any problems this time around.

If you haven’t listened to the show, I would suggest you go listen to it now, and then come back and read this post.

The show was really the first thing thing that went wrong that day.  It seems that the whole day was screwed up!  But still, just as the the song, Good Day from Natives of the New Dawn, “I don’t want to think about the bad days.”  So despite all the things that have gone wrong today, I am happy.  Happy that I accomplished the show, and that it is uploaded.  Who cares that it is 8:30 pm PST and I am writing this from the airplane?  I am listening the show, Episode 35, and I am just happy it is up as I write this.

So, I will probably talk about this in the next episode, but just in case I don’t I am going to share it with you.

The first thing that went wrong is that I was unable to store my huge luggage bag at the hotel.  You know how you can check your bags and get them later?  My plan was to check my bag on Monday, and pick it up on Thursday when I returned.  There was no point in carrying all that clothes to Seattle for only three days.  I knew I had to leave it behind.  The only other choice was to leave it at work.  But, that was a fifteen minute walk from the hotel.  So I opted to leave it at the hotel since it was 8:00 am and I had a 9:30 am flight.  Unfortunately, I was informed that I had to pick it up the same day.

“Shoot, that is not going to work!”  I left my backpack and my duffel bag (what I was taking to Seattle) and quickly ran to work lugging my 75lb bag.  In my mind I had to be back by 8:30 am if I wanted to make the flight.  I arrived at work about 8:15 am and still had to make my way to the server room (the intended storage place for my luggage bag.)  By the time I had everything taken care of, it was 8:20.  Knowing that now I had less time then when I went to work I started to run.  I ran at least 3/4 of the way.  I received a phone call the last quarter and walked fast.

I made it by my expected time.  But all that went through my head was “Yeah! This is really living 150%!”  Here I am, awake for about 25 hours, no breakfast, and putting this stress on my body.  Yet, I felt good.  I really was “Hell Yeah, this is living!”

Well, I made it to the airport at exactly 9:00 am.  Boarding had begun, and I could not find my boarding pass and was still outside the security line.  “Give me fifteen minutes through security and I am fine.”  Well, lucky for me I printed two copies and had the second copy safely in my bag.  I got in and made just in time.

Yet, I arrived in Denver and had yet another mishap.  The flight which was intended to leave at 1:44 pm was now delayed until 4:14 pm.  “No problem,” I thought, “I’ll just work on some emails I have to take care of and work on the show.”  I found a table near an outlet and set shop there.  I took out both my personal and work laptop and worked away.  A blessing in disguise.  Sort of.

I was so into what I was doing, listening to the show, that I didn’t pay attention to the fact that my flight had actually been pushed up to 3:30 pm.  At 3:30 pm I was gathering all my belongings and proceeded to find the terminal.  I went up to see the schedules and didn’t find my flight.  I went to the terminal I thought was the one, and the attendant told me “I called your name several times.  Sorry I am going to have to put you on the next flight.”

And so, here I am now on the 7:50 pm flight to Seattle.  A whole day gone wrong.  But again, I don’t mind.  I found myself productive despite the circumstances.  So much so, that I am happy.  Very, very happy!

Hell yeah!  Let’s do another show! Let’s go save the world! Anything is possible if you want it.

Me in Times Square, NY

Just in case you have not noticed, I did not do a show from New York this past trip.

It’s amazing that you would think that there would be time after work to work on the show, however, believe me that that the hours long and you are practically left with just enough time to eat, sleep, and get ready for the next day.

That was the case this trip. All work, some fun, but no show. I say some fun, because the co-worker I was with and I went to Manhattan the first night. That trip cost us the entire night as we got didn’t get back to the hotel until midnight. Of course, that was to late to do the show.

Yet, I still managed to work on picking out some songs. I already had an oxymoron of the week and also a pick of the week. So really, I had everything I needed to do the show. Except for one thing: a USB hub. I couldn’t connect all the equipment since the computer only has two USB ports. I need at least three.

Each night, we would not leave work earlier than 9:00 pm. That really just gave us enough time to get some dinner. It didn’t give us enough time to go to an office supply store that was nearby. And so, the days went one-by-one until it was time to come home.

But, with everything ready to go, I should be able to do a show this weekend. So expect Episode 34 soon!

Though it seems that every time I keep going over on delaying the show, I am still here. Thanks to everyone for still sticking around. Don’t forget to give me a call!

This time I am coming to you from home, for a change. I have new equipment that is making the show sound better than ever, and making it easier for me to control the show.

117/365 A is for “Agnostic”

As I was going through some old email, I came across this message I sent to an old friend. It amazed me at what I have to say. I wrote it almost a year ago, and had forgotten about it. But I truly feel what I said, and I feel it is well written. I thought I’d share it with everyone.

July 26, 2007

I want to start by saying that I respect your beliefs. However, I truly feel that when I went seeking for God and God’s way, I found out I was deceived.

I will tell you what opened the door for me. Ironically, it was in the Bible: Matthew 13:12-14. Just as you may not be able to distinguish red from green (due to your color blindness), we as human cannot possibly understand God. Just because red and green may seem the same color to you doesn’t mean both colors don’t exist. Taking it a step further, how can you be sure that our senses are capable of perceiving the truth? We can’t. The truth cannot be perceived by us, and that’s what Jesus was referring to in the passage above.

At birth we are giving a reflective lens. We see the world through this reflective lens. You lens will differ from my lens. Genetics and experience define your lens. What you see is not what I see. My “reality” is different than your “reality.” “But how can that be?” you may ask, “Reality is reality and there can only be one reality by definition.” The fact of the matter is that reality can only be perceived. We will never know what reality is. As such, we are left to fill in the blanks.

The Bible is a great resource to fill in the blanks. John 14:1 tells us we must believe in the Lord. Despite any and all contradictions or loop-holes that may be found in the Bible, we must believe in the Lord. Why? It is the only way we consume the “blue pill”. Only by consuming the “blue pill” can society be controlled. That is how we are “kept in check.”

I don’t propose anarchy. I feel I understand the purpose of the Bible and the belief in the Lord. History has shown us that religion and government came hand-in-hand. Why? Because the government needed to impose something on the people so they may listen. I myself have been able to take advantage of this powerful weapon. While experiencing trouble with my own children, I have found that nothing is as effective as imposing God onto them. Imposing God onto them makes me a very powerful father since I can get my children to do what is right for them. It helps me keep them in line. The powers-at-be understood that many, many years ago. And so with government came religion.

Yet, why is it that there are different versions of God throughout the world? Governments around the world were not capable of being “in-sync” with each other. As such, different beliefs and different religions emerged.

But, you don’t have to listen to what I have written. Perhaps I am the “dreamer of dreams” mentioned in Deuteronomy 13:1-5. If that’s the case then erase this email and never think about it again! Take the blue pill and drink up on your glass of water. Return to the Living Church of God. They will help shape your lens that you use to view the world.

Differences aside, my message from my heart to you is: Live Happy.

I hope the move to Charlotte shapes your lens so that you do not see evil, but joy. Life is beautiful.

I will keep you in my daily thoughts. I do believe in the power of attraction. So with my thoughts, I hope to attract a great new life ahead of you.

I know I have not done a show in over a month.  I really hate putting this show aside.  As I have said before work and family have taken all my time.  The few times I have had I chance I have spent it on either playing the guitar or entertaining me with a movie or music.

Still, I really miss doing the show.

I have traveled a couple more times to Seattle.  On both ocassions, I took my equipment and did not have the energy to do a Podcast.  My appologies for that.

So now, as we enter 2008, I hope that I will be able to keep my promise and be able to provide at least two episodes a month.

In the meantime, I wish all of you the best of look in 2008 and may all your wishes come true.

After several months of not recording a show at home, I am finally back. Such a pleasure to be able to do the show live with no post-production. Fact of the matter is that this show had little pre-production as well. Let’s hope that is a sign of more frequent shows. I am just glad I was able to squeeze two shows this month. Let’s hope come Sunday I’ve got another show for you.

For now, I have another surprise, up and coming artist, P.Dizzle, is on the show today. And no, it wasn’t an interview per se. He was actually on the show recording live with me. It’s that whole zero pre-/post-production thing.

As promised, I have changed it around it.  It took me a great deal of time to decide which theme to use.  And finally, I ended going with back to the basics.  All other themes seemed to be too cluttered and had seemed to have the same issue, hard to find information.

Now that I have discovered widgets, it has really made my life easier.  I can put whatever I want in whatever order I want.  This make my page unique to me and my needs while keeping a simple view.  I really hope you enjoy.

Where do I even start?

After playing around in San Francisco under the name “Durham,” Paul Durham ended up creating a new band called Black Lab. In 1998, Black Lab recorded their first album released under Geffen Records titled Your Body Above Me.

Black Lab has many of their songs in mainstream media. “Learn to Crawl” is the fourth track on the Spider-man soundtrack. “This Night” is heard on the new promo for season six of The Shield.

More importantly, Black Lab was chosen as the independent artist to “Bum Rush The Charts”.

Ginnicide – This Time

The first time I heard Ginnicide’s music, I was mesmerized. The music went straight to my heart and started to wrench it. I knew immediately I had to share it with you. Whenever music touches you in this way, it almost becomes part of you.

Too bad I just found out about Ginnicide. She just had a CD release party at Tangier here in Los Angeles. I would’ve gone had I known.

Even Ginnicide is unaware of her early life, having wandered out of Death Valley at approximately the age of ten into the arms of a group of Sister of Mercy missionaries. Adopted by the group and taken to their convent in San Francisco, Ginni (her last name remains unknown, changing constantly with her mood between Inimitable, Kim, Grenadier, and a score of other aliases) showed a great aptitude for the organ, piano, and oboe. She left the order at the age of fifteen in 1996 and survived in the San Francisco streets playing Bach hymns on a toy piano.

After Ginni had acquired enough capital for a car and more portable equipment, Ginni hit the road, playing her songs in bars, hotels, and dance halls throughout the American West, Midwest and East, eventually coming to rest in the city of Angels.

• This was an attempt to show mainstream media that this alternative media (Podcasts) have just as much buying power as traditional media like AM/FM radio.
• Everyone participating, like myself, went out and purchased a song from iTunes. The chosen song, which I will have later on the show, is “Mine Again” by Black Lab.

New Equipment

• I had to do the show even if it was one day after Sunday.
• I bought new equipment.
• I bought a Zoom portable recorder.
• Currently I have it tethered to a linux computer (running Ubuntu) and using Audacity to record the show.
• Yet, I can take it with me and be able to record “on the road.”
• I hope this will be my solution to not putting any more excuses

After another multi-week absence I am back with Episode 19. First, my apologies goes out to the musicians I played on this podcast. I take your work very serious, and like to treat it as something special. My apologies goes out because, the show was recorded in mono! This was by accident, and I hope the quality of the recording did not degrade because of this.

So for those of you interested in knowing what happened, my sound card from my computer I use to record the show began to fail. Believe it or not, I was using a soundcard embedded on the motherboard. This recording, however, was done using an external soundblaster. I feel it could’ve been great had I not messed up the recording setup and changed it to stereo.

  • Delinquent Habits is a Chicano hip hop group. Formed in 1991, they are known for their Latin-tinged rap, which is both melodic and hardcore. Their second album, Here Come The Horns, again featured Sen Dog as well as Sen’s brother, pioneering Latin rapper Mellow Man Ace. The melodic “Merry Go Round” featured the female singer Michelle. The group chose to focus more on hardcore rap on their fourth offering, “Freedom Band”. Their song “Return of the Tres” also featured one of Nike’s football Joga Bonito adverts.

What a useful device! The Blackberry has come in handy many times, in a way like no other device. But is it the device, or the program?

Google Maps for the Blackberry has been a lifesaver.

• The first time: In Seattle it found a WaMu ATM for me.
• Late one night: It pulled up office stores with phone numbers.
• The best one: It found a restaurant for us and told us about half-priced wine!

Useless Knowledge

• When a person is wide awake, alert, and mentally active, he is still only 25% aware of what various parts of his body are doing.
• A dime has 118 ridges around the edge.
• In honor of the original thirteen states, the U.S. $1 bill has the following on the back:
  • 13 steps on the pyramid.
  • The motto above the pyramid has 13 letters (annuit coeptis).

Why is it?

• Why is it called a “building” when it is already built?
• Why is it that when you’re driving and looking for an address, you turn down the volume on the radio?
• Why do we drive on parkways and park on driveways?

There are two explanations for this particular conundrum:(1) the meanings of words change over the years, and (2) the same word can have more than one meaning.

A driveway originally did refer to a road you drive on: a driveway was a private road leading from a main road to a house. (Imagine the stereotyped long winding driveway leading up to a huge manor house and you get the idea.) But nowadays, when driveways are thirty feet long and lead only to a garage–if anything–their purpose is just to store cars next to a house. That’s why we park on driveways.

A Parkway, in contrast, was (and still is) a thoroughfare meant to suggest a park: rather than just being a plain road, it has trees planted on the sides or on a median divider, it’s usually smaller than other highways, it twists and turns–a scenic road, in short. So the park part of parkway is the word meaning ‘a nice-looking part of land in a natural state’, not the word meaning ‘to leave (a vehicle) in a place’. And that’s why we drive on parkways.

So as you may already know, I am always trying to improve the site. In doing so, I failed to realize that I made some changes that messed up the syndication feed that pushes The PePe Show to your aggregator programs and other websites. This syndication feed is the infamous RSS feed. Well, it turns out that the feed was including everything but the podcast! What a drag! To make things worse, it seems that this happened when I posted Episode 7.

As I was checking to see how many people had downloaded The PePe Show, I noticed that no one had. It was very strange because the numbers were high and all of a sudden they dropped to nothing. I was sure that it had to do with the website that tracks the downloads. I knew it was wrong.

Well, it wasn’t, but thank goodness it wasn’t that no one was listening to the show. It was my mistake for fudging with the website.

Oximoron Of The Week

Planning for the unplanned. Last episode was well planned (in my opinion) except for the fact the I left something important: the unplanned. As such it went over an hour long.

The Human Touch

Making things imperfect makes them better.

1. Electronic Music in college: I had to use the pitch bender to give the recording a “warm feeling.”
2. Camera movement: A type of camera movement was created by not keeping the camera steady.
3. Reference: There is a commercial made by Toyota that specifically talks about “The Human Touch.”

Just wanted to let you know that in the next coming weeks I will slowly start to make some changes to the website. One of the more exciting changes will be the site theme. However, little by little, I will also be making some subtle changes.

One of the first changes I want to make is the Blog portion of the website. It will no longer be used to blog anymore. Instead, I will use it to post announcements, and such. For example, this announcement is the type of posting I will be doing.

The other change I will be making is the show notes. I notice that they make the posts very long. Instead, I will just post the topics and songs. However, I will not be posting the details of the show. This change will be beneficial for several reasons. First, it makes the posts easier to read as they will be shorter. Second, it allows me to publish the podcast faster as I don’t have to review it and mark it with times. And last, I don’t have to worry about wrong times.
